Essentially, it is occasional Afib with episodes that always last less than 7 days. The length of time that paroxysmal AFib occurs varies between patients and can be as short as a few seconds, or as long as seven days. In patients with AF at moderate-to-high risk of stroke receiving anticoagulation, those with persistent AF have a higher risk of thrombo-embolic events and worse survival compared with paroxysmal AF. Examples of SVT include atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation (AF), atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) also known as paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT), atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia (AVRT) and multifocal atrial tachycardia (MAT). Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation indicates that the arrhythmia occurs at varying intervals, rather than consistently or constantly. The result of the rapid, irregular beats is ineffective filling of the ventricles, the bottom two chambers of the heart that pump blood out to the body. Risk factors for atrial fibrillation include high blood pressure.

Mapping Atrial Electrical Activity. AF can be triggered or sustained by focal drivers that cluster in specific regions of the left and right atrium. 82 These regions are more prevalent in patients with non-paroxysmal than paroxysmal AF likely due to advanced remodelling associated with greater AF burden.

A clinical perception exists that paroxysmal AF is a precursor, by months or a few years, of permanent AF. Many patients, however, continue to suffer from purely paroxysmal AF for many years and, in any case, paroxysmal AF needs consideration Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation is a condition in which an irregular heart rhythm occurs periodically.
