But Le Samourai is a director’s movie. Melville knows exactly how to frame a shot, and to manipulate viewers into not realizing that they are in the same house Costello was conversing in two scenes before. It is impossible to understand until Melville wants you to realize.

It was released commercially in Hong Kong in the early seventies and immediately turned Alain Delon into a major star in Asia. We had seen Delon in Rocco and His Brothers and Purple Noon, but Le Samourai made him popular among the general audience. Le Samouraï 1967 Jean-Pierre Melville Alain Delon François Périer Nathalie Delon Cathy Rosier To see how beautiful, moving, exciting and astonishing Melville's 'Le Samourai' is, to recognise it as one of the greatest films ever made, arguably the most perfect, it is necessary to forget everything you've been told about it. Melville’s anachronistic lone warrior/assassin/samurai type wandering through 1967 Paris with its modern metro, fast cars and chic night clubs calls to mind the figure of the drifting samurai/gangster/assassin in cult auteur Seijun Suzuki’s 1960s samurai and yakuza films, especially Kanto Wanderer (1963) and Tokyo Drifter. Melville shows us his lone killer’s methodical precision with great flair, and the police manhunt through the Métro is as good an action sequence as any. /5. Trailer.

Melville loved 1930s Hollywood crime movies and in his own work helped develop modern film noir. There is nothing absolutely original in "Le Samourai" except for the handling of the material. Melville pares down and leaves out.

Minimal and breathtaking, Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samourai features an icy and smoldering lead performance from one of the most beautiful human beings to ever grace the big screen: Alain Delon. Much like in my recent reviews of Blade Runner 2049 and Atomic Blonde , my thoughts on Le Samourai turn quickly to style as the film’s most defining characteristic.

It is impossible to understand until Melville wants you to realize. Melville is God to me.

From Brandon Colvin, Out 1: The opening shot of Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 noir masterpiece "Le Samourai" establishes the tone of Melville’s contemplative crime film, defines its amoral protagonist Jef Costello (Alain Delon), and introduces the connections between Costello, a hired assassin, and the concept of the Japanese samurai, particularly the ronin, or masterless samurai.
